On November 11th 2008, I had the pleasure of seeing North Vancouver's The Stereo Three Live at The Railway Club as part of CiTR 101.9FM's annual Shindig battle-of-the-bands-type contest.
The Railway's front compartment was packed with well-wishers and local punk scenesters, ready for a good ol' rockin good time. With a tasty 20-minutes of material ahead, the crowd was raring to go. As the lights came down, I heard one guy bellow: "Let's Go The Stereo Three!" I knew it was time to rock.
I love all things punk rock, so I figured this show would be a good change of pace for me. I haven't seen a good old fashioned punk band since the DOA show a while back. Myspace provided me with a sampling of the band's boisterous brand of straight-ahead punk, but a sampling is never enough for me.
The trio burned up the stage with a 9-song set that featured the throat-grinding voice and lead bass of Ryan C, the gnashing guitar riffs and ear-punching, PA pounding vocals of Duncan I, and the machine-gun mastery of Sam A on drums. And yes, Sam can be a girl's name too. P.S. this girl plays like Paul Cook.
The set ended before anybody in the crowd really realized what was happening. A true 'Hit & Run' experience. Apparently this was only their 2nd show, but for God's sakes, let there be a third!
